history of the Farm
In the 1940's, the State of Washington purchased the property that is currently Monroe Farms. At that time, the property consisted of 100-acres and an early 1900's farmhouse. The State used the property for the Spokane Game Farm, where they raised 12,000+ chinese pheasants. Numerous outbuildings were built by the state, including a duplex that was used as a bunkhouse for adolescents who came to the property to work on the pheasant farm. There are still many remnants around the farm that date back to its time as a game farm - including the original Spokane Game Farm sign that is on display on the property. A wind storm broke the posts holding the old sign during escrow and one of my first items of business upon owning the farm was to save the historic sign and keep it on display where it could be enjoyed for generations to come.
